How to Decorate Your Garden With Mums for Fall
Mums are the unofficial flower of fall—but there’s so much more to them than a pot on the porch. Here’s how to use chrysanthemums to create beautiful, layered fall displays throughout your garden.
There’s a reason mums return to our gardens every fall. They bring instant color, last through the season’s cooler days, and come in an almost irresistible range of rich autumn shades—from pumpkin orange and golden yellow to burgundy, bronze, lavender, pink, and creamy white.
But this year, don’t think of mums as something you simply put outside.
Think of them as your starting point.
Whether you’re refreshing the front porch, dressing up a patio, adding color to a garden bed, or creating a welcoming entrance, mums can turn an ordinary fall space into something that feels collected, colorful, and completely seasonal.
Start With the Right Fall Color Palette
One of the easiest ways to make fall decorating feel intentional is to choose a color story.
For a classic autumn look, pair gold, orange, and bronze mums with pumpkins and natural wood tones.
Want something a little more sophisticated? Try burgundy, deep red, lavender, and creamy white.
Or keep it simple by repeating one color throughout your containers and garden beds. A mass of one mum color can have just as much impact as a mix of everything fall has to offer.
The secret? Repeat your colors instead of using every color at once.
Go Beyond the Porch
Mums aren’t just for front steps.
Use them to add seasonal color wherever your garden needs a little fall refresh.
Dress Up the Front Entrance
Create a welcoming entrance by grouping mums in containers of different heights. Place larger pots near the door and smaller ones along steps or walkways.
Then add a few pumpkins, gourds or lanterns for an easy fall vignette.
Designer tip: Don’t line everything up perfectly. Slightly relaxed, natural groupings tend to look more inviting.
Add Mums to Garden Beds
Is your perennial garden starting to look tired?
Tuck flowering mums into empty spaces for an instant shot of fall color.
Mums work especially well alongside ornamental grasses and plants with interesting foliage. The combination of flowers, texture and movement makes the garden feel much richer than a bed filled with blooms alone.
When you plant mums in groups, the effect is even better.
Think “drifts of color,” not “one of everything.”
Create a Fall Container Garden
One of our favorite ways to use mums is in containers.
Instead of planting a single mum, use the thriller, filler, and spiller approach to create a container that looks designed rather than simply planted.
Start with a mum as your main burst of color, then add plants with contrasting foliage, texture, or height.
Try pairing mums with:
- Ornamental grasses for movement and height
- Coral bells for colorful foliage
- Sedges for texture
- Ornamental peppers for unexpected color
- Trailing plants to soften the edges
- Pumpkins or gourds for a classic fall finishing touch
The result is a container that looks good from every angle—and feels much more like a garden than a seasonal decoration.
Make Mums the Color, Not Just the Decoration
Here’s another way to think about fall decorating: use plants as your décor.
Instead of filling the porch with artificial decorations, let living plants create the color and texture.
A large pot overflowing with mums can become the focal point of your entrance. Ornamental grasses can add height and movement. Foliage plants can provide deep greens, burgundies, and silvers.
Then add just a few seasonal accents.
A pumpkin here. A lantern there.
Let the plants do most of the decorating.
Try a Moody Fall Garden
Fall doesn’t have to mean orange and yellow.
For a more modern look, build your garden around darker, richer tones.
Think:
Burgundy mums + dark foliage + ornamental grasses + warm pumpkins
Or:
Lavender mums + silver foliage + deep purple foliage + natural wood
The contrast feels sophisticated while still looking unmistakably autumnal.
And because fall gardens are all about texture, don’t be afraid to mix flowers with foliage and grasses.
Don’t Forget the Backyard
Fall entertaining doesn’t have to stop at the front door.
Use mums around patios, outdoor dining areas, fire pits, and seating areas to make your backyard feel just as inviting as the front porch.
A few large containers around an outdoor seating area can create a cozy garden room with little effort.
Add string lights, a few lanterns, and a basket of cozy throws—and suddenly your backyard has a whole new personality.
How to Keep Your Fall Mums Looking Beautiful
The best fall décor is décor that stays beautiful.
Mums prefer sun and well-drained soil, and container-grown mums should be watered consistently so they don’t dry out.
One important trick: don’t assume cooler fall temperatures mean your containers don’t need water. Mums can still dry out quickly, particularly when they’re growing in containers.
If you’re hoping to plant mums in the garden and have them return next year, choose varieties specifically suited for perennial performance. Fall-planted mums can be less likely to survive winter because they have less time to establish their roots before freezing temperatures arrive.
The Easiest Fall Garden Update? Add More Mums.
You don’t need to redesign your entire landscape to make your garden feel fall-ready.
Sometimes the simplest update makes the biggest difference.
Add a few mums to the front porch. Fill an empty container. Bring color into a tired garden bed. Pair them with grasses and foliage. Repeat the same color in several places around your yard.
Think of mums as the punctuation mark at the end of the gardening season.
They add one last big burst of color—and give your garden plenty of personality before winter arrives.
So go ahead. Pick your colors, grab a few beautiful containers, and make your own version of fall.
Because fall decorating isn’t just about pumpkins.
It’s about making your garden feel beautiful, too.
