How to Keep Your Container Garden Watered While You’re on Vacation: 6 Essential Tips
Are you worried about how to water your container garden while you’re away? Here are six simple tips to help keep your plants healthy and hydrated until you return.
1. Group Container Garden Plants in a Shady Spot
If possible, move your container plants to a semi-shaded location, either indoors or outdoors. By grouping them together, the plants will create shade for each other, which helps reduce water loss and slows down drying.
2. Use Soil Moist for Extended Hydration
Soil Moist crystals absorb up to 200 times their weight in water and gradually release it back to the plant’s roots, reducing the need for frequent watering by up to half.
Tip: If you didn’t add Soil Moist to your soil initially, you can still do so. Poke several holes in the soil with a pencil or dowel, then drop a few crystals into each hole.
3. Water Thoroughly Before You Leave
Give your plants a deep watering before you go, even if they don’t appear dry. This will recharge the soil, plants, and Soil Moist crystals with maximum moisture.
4. Use Aqua Cones for Slow Release
Consider adding one or two Aqua Cones to each container garden. When attached to a filled 2-liter bottle, these cones will slowly release water into the soil as needed, providing a steady supply of moisture and extending the time before the next watering.
5. Place Saucers Under Your Container Garden
For this one time, we recommend placing saucers under your pots and leaving a small amount of water in them. This will help extend the watering interval, but remember to remove the saucers once you’re back to avoid overwatering in the future.
6. Set Up a DIY Drip Irrigation System
Consider installing a DIY drip irrigation system with a timer if you have multiple containers. This setup allows you to water your plants on a schedule, even while you’re away. It’s an efficient solution for gardeners with multiple container plants.
