How to Water New Plants: A Simple Guide
Proper watering is one of the most important steps in helping newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials thrive. Too little water can dry out roots, while too much water can stress them and slow plant growth.
Follow these simple watering tips from Natorp’s to help your new plants establish healthy roots and grow successfully.
How Often Should You Water New Plants?
New plants need consistent moisture to establish roots. Use this watering schedule as a starting point, and adjust as needed for weather and soil moisture.
Days 1–2: Water Thoroughly
Water your new plants thoroughly immediately after planting. Water again the following day to help keep the soil around the roots moist.
First 3–4 Weeks: Check Soil Moisture Daily
Keep the soil evenly moist during the first three to four weeks after planting. Check the soil daily and water when needed to prevent it from drying out.
After 4 Weeks: Water Deeply
After 4 weeks, water deeply, then let the soil get close to dry before watering again.
Depending on the weather, watering may be needed every 3–10 days. Always check soil moisture rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
How to Tell When Your Plants Need Water
Checking the soil is the easiest way to determine whether your new plants need water.
- Check the soil. Insert your finger 1–2 inches into the soil near the plant’s roots.
- If the soil is dry, water. Dry soil indicates that your plant needs water.
- If the soil is moist, check again tomorrow. Avoid watering unnecessarily when the soil is already moist.
- If the soil is soggy, wait. Allow the soil to dry before watering again.
A soil moisture meter can also help you determine when to water.
Watering Tips for Hot, Dry, or Windy Weather
Hot temperatures, dry conditions, and wind can dry out soil more quickly. Check your new plants more frequently during these conditions and water as needed.
Remember: Light rain may not provide enough water for newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials. Always check the soil moisture before deciding whether to water.
Help Your New Plants Thrive
Proper watering helps protect your investment and gives your plants a better chance to establish healthy roots. By checking soil moisture regularly and adjusting your watering routine as your plants grow, you can help keep your landscape looking its best.
