What is the Emerald Ash Borer?
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a non native beetle (metallic wood-borer family) that has invaded North America and is threatening to infest and destroy all Ash trees. Tens of millions of Ash trees have already been lost to EAB in over 12 different states, including Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, as well as parts of Canada. If you live in an EAB quarantined area or within 10-15 miles of where it has been detected, its time to get serious and SAVE YOUR ASH TREES!
Natorp's Landscape Can Save Your Ash Trees
Your Ash trees can be saved from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) through the protective use of a systemic insecticide treatment which is taken up inside the tree. Natorp's recommendations:
For Smaller Ash Trees / Soil-Applied Systemic: For Ash trees 5 inch diameter or smaller, apply a soil-drench systemic insecticide containing 'Imidacloprid'. Bonide's 'Annual Tree & Shrub Insect Control' and Bayer Advanced '12-Month Tree and Shrub Insect Control' are recommended for EAB control. Both are available at Natorp's Garden Stores and easily applied in mid spring and /or mid fall by the homeowner. Always read the label and follow the instructions.
For Larger Ash trees / Trunk-Injected Systemic: For Ash trees larger than 5 inch trunk diameter (measured 48 inches above soil level), Natorp's recommends trunk injections of "Tree-age" (emamectin benzoate). Research shows "Tree-age" provides excellent control of EAB, has shown superior results over other treatment options (assuming proper rates / time of application / health -absorption by tree) and is the
only product tested 'to date' which controls EAB for more than one year with a single application (current data showing up to three years protection). "Tree-age" is injected directly into the trunk of the tree, absorbed then transported within the tree to provide EAB protection. The injection is made after the trees have leafed out and are actively growing; typically mid May and after depending on weather. Injections are made by Natorp's fully- trained professionally licensed applicators.
What levels of costs are involved to save your Ash trees?
"Using the "Tree-age" injection, the true cost is approximately $13 per inch, (depending on the overall size of the tree) with a minimum charge of $125. 5 or more ash trees $11 per inch trunk diameter."
Tree removal costs of infested trees
- Cost of tree replacements and planting new trees
- The tree's contribution to your property value
(EAB Long Range Note: Researchers feel that once the EAB has gone through an area and the Ash trees not protected are dead, the EAB population will quickly drop (no food source). The pressure on the remaining Ash trees will be greatly reduced and preventative treatments can be reduced as well.)
