Flowering Plants for Indoors

If you’re looking for a couple easy to grow flowering plants for indoors, here are 2 that you may want to consider.

Orchids…yes, orchids!  There are many types of orchids available, but the most common is the phalaenopsis orchid, or commonly called the moth orchid.  These blooms can last as long as 2-3 months, after which you simply remove the old flowering stem, which allows the plant to regroup, and usually push up a new spike within the next several months.  Keep your orchid in temperatures around 60 degrees to 70 degrees, give them good light but nothing direct, keep them evenly moist, and yes, feel free to mist them 2-3 times a week to help add humidity around the plant.  As for feeding, once a month is more than enough during the winter…every 2-3 weeks during the summer…using an orchid food.

African violets are another basically easy to grow indoor flowering plant.  They are available in many colors and flower types, and under the right conditions, are able to bloom almost continuously indoors.  African violets need good light to flower, again nothing direct, especially not the hot afternoon sun, and do exceptionally well under florescent lights, as long as the lights are on 12-16 hours per day.  African violets enjoy temperatures between 65 and 80, and want a moist yet well drained soil.  When watering, make sure you use room temperature water, and keep it off the leaves.  Many folks will sub irrigate, using a saucer of water and allowing the violet to sit in the water for a couple hours to soak up the water.

Violets also like regular feedings to encourage blooming…use a fertilizer especially developed for violets.

Phalaenopsis orchids and African Violets…two fairly easy for you to grow indoor flowering plants.
