Bird Feeding Month

Did you know that February is National Bird Feeding Month?  It is, and if you’re feeding the birds, good for you.  And if you aren’t, well there’s no time like the present to get started.

February can be one of the toughest months on a bird’s survival, which is why everyone is encouraged to help the birds by providing food, water and even shelter.  Feeding the birds can also be great entertainment for the family, especially the kids, and is a proven stress reliever for the adults.

Now when it comes to choosing a bird feeder, the choices are many, as you can see here at the Wild Bird Center in Mason.  So the one you pick depends on what birds you’d like to feed, and personal preference on the style.

And choosing the right seed…well it, too, depends on what types of birds you’d like to attract to your yard.  I mean look at all the different types of bird seed available!  Most of this stuff looks like the trail mix I’d buy for myself in the grocery store!  And besides a few bugs here and there, they taste like it too!

But if you’re looking for the one “sure fire” best all around bird seed to use in your feeder, it’s definitely the Black Oiled Sunflower Seed.  And don’t forget the suet cakes.  Its pure fat, and usually mixed with seeds or nuts to help provide the high energy and extra calories those birds need to stay warm over the winter.

And don’t forget to supply water for the birds as well.  Sure they may drink some of it, but the main reason for providing water is for the birds to take a bath!  Proper preening and keeping their feathers clean provides them with extra insulation and warmth from the cold winter temperatures.
