We’re here at the 2008
Cincinnati Flower Show, and well, you know my passion for container
gardening…so today, let’s take a look at a few of the great container
gardens, and more specifically, the best of show.
There are two categories
in container gardening…window boxes, and then gardening in pots…or something
similar.
There were many window
boxes to see this year, with some great combinations of annuals, perennials
and tropical plants. This year, the ‘Best of Show’, went to this window
box, planted by Susan Fox. In this box, you will find a mixed planting of
Bergenia Apple Blossom, Heuchera Amber Waves, Tuberous Begonias, Vinca Vine,
and Boston Fern. A great combination of annuals, perennials, and tropicals.
In the container
gardens, there were many great plantings…including this one depicting Route
66 “The Mother Road”, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” with the combination
herb plantings, a portrait of
John Lennon made from
selections of moss, plantings in recycled tubs, garbage cans and Tide
bottles, this one made from recycled wire cages, and who said pink flamingos
weren’t popular anymore?
But here is the ‘Best of
Show’ in container gardens…planted by Pat Greeson, the container is made
from recycled construction materials including these 100 year old bricks
from New Richmond, old cobble stones from the streets of Cincinnati, and
blocks from the Sands Montessori. This planter is filled with 5 selections
of begonias, including Sophia (an Angel Wing begonia) and Escargot (a Rex
begonia). You’ll also find New Guinea Impatiens, Bleeding Hearts, Japanese
Painted ferns, and Pink Chablis Lamium.
Just seeing all these
great container gardens really gets me fired up! You know what I say…if you
aren’t container gardening…you just aren’t gardening! |
