Burning Calories in the Yard

The holiday season has finally arrived and that means food, food, and more food.  And if you’re worried about all those calories, I’ve got a great solution for you…and its right here in your own back yard.

You see, working in the yard is one of the best waist shrinker calorie burning things you can do.  Based on the weight of a 180 pound man, here’s how many calories you can burn for every ½ hour time frame of gardening:

Dragging the hose around and watering evergreens before the winter…around 60 calories

Mowing the lawn on a riding mower…around 100 calories

Mowing the lawn with a push mower…around 240 calories

Trimming the dead perennial foliage or pruning branches…around 140 calories

Edging the beds or planting new plants…around 180 calories

Weeding the beds with a garden hoe…around 180 calories

And one of the best workouts and calorie burner in the yard…raking…great overall exercise, and burns around 170 calories per half hour.

And when it’s all said and done, here’s one of my favorite calorie burners.  Just sitting quietly enjoying my fruits of labor…I’ll actually burn about 40 calories every half hour just sitting here…hey is that turkey I smell?  Gotta run!  Happy Holidays.
