2007 Home and Garden Show

We’re here at the 5/3 Bank Cincinnati Home and Garden Show, and today I thought that I would walk us around and point out a few specific ideas or plants that I think are pretty cool.  Come on let’s take a look.

Take note of all the tropical plants being used, not only in containers, but in the actual landscape itself.  J.R. Morris has created a tropical garden combining both tropicals and your normal landscaping plants.  And here’s a cutie to take note of…it’s called Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, or Flapjacks.  Great in a container, loves the sun, grow it outdoors in the summer, and it makes a great houseplant indoors during the winter.

Water gardening is also everywhere here at the show, so be sure to check out the different styles.  I like the rain chains splashing into the water urns at the Natorp garden, and when you visit the Allison Landscaping & Water Gardens garden, check out these vertical columns of Basalt stone…which is crystallized lava!  This stone is actually quarried vertically, and really lends itself to a whole new look for water gardening.

At the Civic Garden Center’s garden, you can see what the buzz is all about concerning “green roof gardens”.  This new concept for roofing is big on the west coast and working its way across the country, and their display shows how it works and the many types of plants used to create the green roofs.

The Cincinnati Parks and Cincinnati Magazine has a great display on the use of vertical gardening, using grow bags and pouches, to create this wonderfully colorful living wall!  And the interesting thing is, this concept can be done indoors and out!

Stepping out of the gardens and bringing it to the table, our friends at Jones the Florist has created this very unusual display of bringing the garden to the table centerpieces.  Bring your camera as there as some very interesting and truly out of the box ideas in this display.  My favorite…this table setting with a grass print table cloth, grass filled vases, and moss covered rocks with more grass.  I’d feel like I’m eating in the lawn with this set-up!

With all the great gardens and all the great plants, I had to stop here, as the folks at Allen Brothers Landscape have displayed one of the nicest specimen plant that I’ve ever seen, which just happens to be my favorite plant.  Corylus contorta, or Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick.  Isn’t this a beauty?  You’ll find this, and a whole lot more at this year’s home and garden show.
