Wow! Spring has sprung
very quickly, and so have the numbers of your great emailed gardening
questions! Like this one…when’s the best time to feed my spring flowering
bulbs?
Spring and fall are the
best times to feed spring flowering bulbs. In the spring, try to feed them
before they flower, using a bulb food such as Espoma’s Bulb Tone. And don’t
forget to leave that foliage on the bulb for at least 6 weeks after they
finish flowering.
I’m getting a lot of
emails from confused gardeners asking about the correlation of forsythia in
flower and applying pre emergent herbicides. Are they supposed to be
applied before, during or after the forsythia flower?
That can be confusing.
Just remember it’s best to have your pre emergent herbicides in place and
ready to go when the air and soil temperatures reach 55 degrees
consistently…and that just happens to be when the forsythia flower. So
anytime just before or while the forsythia are in flower works best. And if
for some reason you can’t get to it, you can still apply pre emergents after
the forsythia are finished flowering. Those yellow flowers are simply
reminders.
With the sudden warming
of temperatures, suckers are already beginning to grow around the base of
many trees. So the question is, is there anything that can be done for them
early in the season, to keep them from coming up?
And the answer is yes!
All you need is a bottle of “Sucker Stopper”…great name huh? By applying
Sucker Stopper to those young suckers right now, you’ll stop them in their
tracks, and prohibit any more growth for more than a year! Now is a great
time to apply Sucker Stopper, but can be used anytime during the season,
that you need to stop those suckers!
One last tip…remember
how I told you to get rid of chickweed before it goes to flower and seeds?
Well take a look. It’s already starting to flower! And once it does, seeds
follow in a very short period of time, and once the seeds fall to the
ground, they’re all set for re-growing this fall. So get after that
chickweed! |
