Coleus

As you’ve probably figured out by now, my favorite plants are those with great foliage colors.  Sure I like flowers, but when you can find a plant that has leaves which are as showy if not more than flowers, it’s got my name written all over it.  And one of my favorite selections for annuals - shade planting, is coleus!

Now coleus has come a long way over the years in new selections, leaf shapes and colors.  It’s unbelievable how many different types of coleus you’ll find today in your local garden stores.  And you can tell by the names that coleus breeders are having a lot of fun coming up with new selections.

Dappled Apple - Christmas Candy - Twist and Twirl – Freckles - Religious Radish - these are just 5 of the many different coleuses available today.  And although most coleus are shade lovers - maybe a little morning sun - plant breeders have now developed sun coleus!

Merlot - Dark Star - Red Ruffles - and one of my favorites, Fishnet Stockings - these are coleus that will grow in shade, but will also tolerate the sun.

And one on my favorites to come along in the coleus selections is this one.  KONG Coleus - and the name says it all.  These shade lovers will each get 2-3 feet tall, 2-3 feet in diameter, and the leaves will get as big as 10-12 inches across.  And there several colors variations from which to choose!  Coleus - truly my favorite annual, especially for the shade!
