Purple Plant Pizzazz

If you’re looking for a few ways to add some pizzazz to your landscape, maybe in the form of colorful leaves from an ornamental tree, I have some options for you to consider - all in the color of purple.

Canada Red Cherry - usually sold in single or multi-trunk form, Canada Red Cherry is unique in that early spring, it first leafs out with bright green foliage, followed by wonderful clumps of fragrant white flowers.  But shortly after the flowering, those green leaves turn this wonderful purple to maroon color, and stay like that, all season long.

How about Purple Plum?  An oldie but still a goodie.  Light pink flowers in the spring, followed by the wonderful purple to maroon leaves, again which last all season.  Don’t forget that Purple Plum is available in both a tree form, and a large growing shrub form, called Cistena Plum.

Like Redbuds?  Well here’s one that will add a little more than the wonderful lavender purple flowers in the spring.  It’s Forest Pansy Redbud, and after those lavender spring flowers finish, the foliage appears, in colors ranging from a greenish maroon to a good purple maroon color.  That’s Forest Pansy Redbud.

Here’s one that’s a bit different.  Its common name is “Ninebark”, and this one is called “Diabolo” Ninebark.  Available in both shrub and this smaller ornamental tree form, Diabolo has pinkish white button like flowers in the spring, followed by this spectacular deep burgundy foliage throughout the rest of the season.

And one more, and one of my favorites, “Blacklace Elderberry”.  Great in containers, or great in the ground, this ornamental shrub or small tree begins the season with this outstanding dark maroon foliage, followed by clusters of pink flowers in late spring.  Tough, hardy, and fast growing once it gets established, this new plant can be a real specimen in the landscape.
