One of the biggest
questions I get right now is “what is the grassy looking plant, lime green
in color, that grows faster than my grass - I even have it in my landscape
beds – what is it and how do I get rid of it?”
It’s called nutgrass or
nutsedge and yes it grows in both the lawns and in the landscape. Nutgrass
is very tough and hard to control thanks to the nuts it develops in the soil
and the waxy coating it has on the foliage.
In the landscape beds,
use Roundup or Kleenup along with a surfactant such as Turbo Spreader
Sticker. This helps the herbicide to penetrate the nutgrasses waxy
covering. And yes, it will usually take 2 applications to control it.
In the lawns, use
Sedgehammer, which has been specifically created for controlling nutgrass in
the lawn (can be used in the landscape as well). Again, use a surfactant to
help it penetrate the waxy foliage, and yes, it will take 2 applications as
well. Only treat the area infested with the nutgrass and not the entire
lawn.
Once again, for either
of these to work properly, you must use the surfactant to help penetrate the
waxy coating on the foliage. The surfactant is the key in helping these
chemicals work in controlling nutgrass. |
