Ornamental Grass Decorations

This time of the year, ornamental grasses really start to put on their show.  The foliage is reaching mature size and of course, their plumes and seed heads can be simply spectacular.  But if you’re a football fanatic like me, those seed heads and plumes are a great way to show off your team colors!

One of my favorites to show off your team colors is using the dwarf fountain grass.  These smaller grasses can be used in containers, as center pieces, or all by themselves indoors or out, especially when you’re entertaining and watching your favorite football team.  Make sure your grass has a nice display of plumes or seed heads, then grab some spray paint that matches the colors of your favorite football team, and have at it.

Spray an even number of plumes or seed heads with each of the team’s colors.  In my case, I’ll do a few with Red and Black for the Bearcats, Orange and Black for the Bengals, and of course, a whole bunch of them with Scarlet and Gray for Thee Ohio State University.  But the colors you chose are up to you!

Spraying the plumes or seed heads of the ornamental grasses doesn’t hurt the plants.  As a matter of fact, after I sprayed this one scarlet and gray, I think it grew more, and these stems are stronger than ever.  Of course, what do you expect when you’re spray painted the same colors as the number 1 team in the nation!
