Potted Evergreens

Okay, it’s the holiday season and you’d like a small Christmas tree but don’t want to go through the process of putting up a cut tree…you just want a little tree to help set the mood for Christmas.  Well I’ve got a couple options for you…one that can be grown outdoors and one that is grown indoors.

Try using a potted evergreen that can be grown outdoors.  You can find these smaller potted evergreens at your local garden stores…a couple examples would be these Norway spruce or these cute Alberta spruce.  If you chose potted evergreens, remember this…they can only stay in the house for 7-10 days.  As a matter of fact, the procedure for using live evergreens as a Christmas trees indoors is 2 days in the garage, 7-10 days in the house, 2 days in the garage, and then plant it.

And if you’d rather not get involved with an evergreen to be re-planted outdoors, then keep this one in mind.  It’s the Norfolk Island Pine!  It’s not actually a pine, but definitely has the look. This evergreen houseplant has been around for years, pretty easy to grow, and looks great decorated for the holiday season.  Give your Norfolk Island Pine plenty of sunlight, keep the soil well drained but evenly moist, and it will grow for you indoors, as a houseplant, and can be used year after year as your live Christmas tree.

By the way, in their native warm climate, Norfolk Island Pines can reach 50 to 200 feet tall!  But don’t worry…it’s not a really fast grower indoors, so it should last for several years in your home, before you have to cut a hole in the ceiling to let it keep growing.
