More Holiday Plants

No doubt that the Poinsettia is the number one live plant for decorating indoors for the holidays.  But there are a few other interesting plants that you may want to include with your decorating plans.

Jerusalem artichoke…or sometimes called Christmas Cherry.  It’s a non-hardy bushy evergreen shrub that’s greenhouse grown as a winter fruiting annual.  Glossy green leaves, white flowers in the summer, and then produces these colorful orange red fruits, just in time for the holiday season.  Grow as a houseplant over the winter, move it outside in the summer, where it will reflower and reset these wonderful fruits.  One note…the fruits are toxic, so keep them away from the kids and the pets.

African Violets…been around forever, and are one of the easiest indoor flowering plants to grow.  Lots of colors to choose from, and a great way to add holiday colors to your home.

Cyclamen…wonderful foliage, and look at these gorgeous flowers.  Keep your cyclamen in a cooler – well lit location, and make sure the soil stays evenly moist.  At some point the flowers will stop and the plant will yellow.  But don’t toss it out.  It’ll go dormant for a while and then start to regrow several weeks later.

And how about the Christmas cactus?  Almost as traditional as the poinsettia, these wonderful bloomers are available in a multitude of colors.  Easy to care for and easy to grow indoors, this ones been around for a long time.  Keep them in a cooler well lit area, and when it comes to watering, they’re not a true cactus, so water when the top half of the soil feels dry.

And don’t forget paperwhites and amaryllis bulbs for not only holiday colors…but for providing your home with wonderful flowers throughout the entire winter season.
