Sedum is an easy to grow, succulent
perennial. Both foliage and yellow, orange, pink, red, or white
flowers are attractive. Sedums have fleshy leaves and butterfly
attracting large clusters of small flowers in summer or early
fall, depending on the variety. Grows in height from 3inches to 2
feet. Sedum will thrive in the sun even in the worst of soils.
It is an excellent choice to use as edging or
borders, and some varieties are good groundcovers.
Sedum spectabile 'Autumn Joy' pictured above, is one
of the most popular varieties. It has year 'round value. Quickly
it forms a 2 foot clump of silver-green leaves that are beautiful
for the entire summer. During midsummer large, flat heads of light
green flowers appear. These flowers gradually change to pink, then
rose and finally a rusty-red as autumn advances. The dead flowers
look good all winter because they hold their shape. Also the
flowers can be picked for dried bouquets. 'Autumn Joy' tolerates
partial shade and moist soils.
