Cercis canadensis more commonly known as
Redbud or Eastern Redbud is a small to medium-sized ornamental tree. It
has a striking two to three week floral display in April before its
foliage emerges.
The Redbud has many landscape uses; foundation, specimen, entranceway,
group planting, woodland edge, naturalization or Spring accent tree.
In its youth the Redbud has an upright vase growth habit. As it matures
it becomes more spreading and rounded to irregularly-shaped. The Redbud
has a rapid growth rate in its youth, with a medium growth rate after
ten years. The foliage emerges bronzed to medium green, slowly turning
to dark green. It does not have a distinctive fall color. The early
Spring flowers start as small, clustered, sessile dark brown floral buds
which swell to purple-lavender-pink buds.
The Redbud prefers to be planted in full sun to partial shade in rich,
well-drained soil. However it is somewhat adaptable to many types of
soils. It will grow to 15 feet tall by 15 feet wide, but can become
twice as large under optimum conditions. |
