Acer rubrum 'October Glory' and Acer rubrum
'Red Sunset' are two of the best and most popular Red Maple cultivars.
Both are excellent for intense fall color and have a medium to fast
growth rate. In the spring, red flowers in dense clusters form before
the leaves. March into April, each flower on a reddish pedicel are at
first quite short but lengthen as the flower and fruit develop. The Red
Maple is an excellent tree for lawn or street planting.
The 'October Glory' Red Maple has a good oval-rounded form. It tends to
hold its lustrous dark green leaves late into fall. The intensity of the
brilliant orange to red fall color is worth the wait. It will grow to a
height of 40 to 50 feet.
The 'Red Sunset' Red Maple has a lovely pyramidal to rounded outline.
'Red Sunset' is one of the highest rated trees in Ohio Shade Tree
Evaluation tests and it is known for its cold hardiness. During fall it
colors before 'October Glory'. It will grow to a height 45 to 50 feet
with a width of 35 to 40 feet.
