Primrose


Primula vulgaris

There are many varieties of Primrose. All have basal rosettes of leaves and tubular, bell-shaped, or flat (primrose-like) flowers. There are primroses to suit almost every garden situation. Primula vulgaris or Common Primrose is an early spring favorite. It bears clusters of single flat flowers in many bright colors with white or yellow eyes. The leaves are a fresh green lance-shaped to oval, crinkled, toothed or scalloped. The Common Primrose will grow 6 to 8 inches in height and a width of 6 to 8 inches. This primrose grows best in partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Primroses due well in rock gardens, in borders, by water gardens and they will brighten the house when brought inside.

Primula malacoides is another variety to look for and enjoy.
