Maiden Grass

(Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus')

fall

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' is most commonly known as Maiden Grass. Considered by some to be the most elegant of all the grasses, it is a frequent subject of Japanese artists. This grass is upright and arching, forming 4 to 6 feet tall rounded mounds. The ¼-inch wide, long, curly, fine textured leaves have a prominent white midvein. Maiden Grass is spectacular in the fall with its coppery-red blooms. The flowers eventually turn a silvery-white.

Miscanthus varieties, including 'Gracillimus', are especially valued for their four season interest. It is best to select a sight for your Maiden Grass in full sun with average soil that is moist but well drained. Be sure to give plenty of room as mature clumps can be 6 feet or more across. Enjoy the plants through the winter and then cut the plants to the ground in the late winter to early spring. Maiden Grass is ideal for the back of a border, as a specimen or area of attraction. They are often used boldly in big spaces.
