Liriope is a spreading, mounding
grassy-leaved perennial. The plain green or variegated
narrow and arching foliage is just as decorative as the flowers.
The late summer small, rounded bell-shaped flowers in dense
upright
spikes rise in colors of white, pale lilac or shades of
blue-purple. Dark berries follow the flowers and can be picked for
late-fall arrangements. Liriope will thrive in well drained soil,
sun or shade. It will tolerate heat, humidity, drought, heavy
shade, and competition from tree roots. It is best to cut the
plants to the ground in late winter to make room for the fresh new
foliage. Different varieties vary is height from 8
inches to 18 inches.
It is an excellent choice to use as edging, low accent for
borders, or groundcover around trees and on slopes.
Some varieties to look for:
Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'
Liriope muscari 'Variegata'
Liriope spicata 'Green'
Liriope spicata 'Silver Dragon'
