Impatiens Planters are wonderful for a vibrant
splash of color to dress up a shady area of a porch, deck or
patio.
Impatiens are succulent tender annuals that have delicate, pointed
leaves and bright flowers in pastels and bright colors. Impatiens are a
top-rated annual because of their uniform habit, ease of growth,
tolerance of shade, dependability and dazzling blooms from early summer
until fall. These flowers
are indispensable used in mass planting or for shaded porches, patio corners and under garden
shrubs and small trees. Impatiens are also excellent for baskets, boxes,
borders, containers or planters.
Flowers are mostly single, but doubles are available. Colors include
white, pink, rose, red, scarlet, violet, salmon and orange. Some have
white centers.
Impatiens are most successful in partial shade
with consistent moisture and will grow quickly to a mature height of 1
to 1½ feet. In hot weather it is alright if foliage wilts during the
afternoon heat as long as its perks up by evening. Avoid excessive
fertilizer, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Faded flowers are self-cleaning and seldom require pinching.
These varieties come in separate colors and color mixes.
'Accent' gets no more than 8 inches tall.
'Super Elfin' grows from 6 to 12 inches tall.
'Blitz' reaches 1½ feet.
A separate group called New Guinea Impatiens features attractive foliage
that often is maroon or green variegated, with large luminescent
flowers.
