Garden Mums are the prelude to fall.
This perennial is known for its reliable flowering from late
summer to hard frost and for its ease of growth. The most popular
garden varieties are offered as cushion mums and produce dense,
compact low mounds smothered with flowers. Colors range from pure
white to red, bright yellow, shades of orange, rust, and bronze,
many pinks and lavenders.
Slow growing Garden Mums do best planted in moist, well-drained
soil, in a full sun location. Low growing Garden Mums can be used
in front of perennial gardens or as edging plants. Taller Garden
Mums can be used for cut flowers. All types grow well in
containers. Garden Mums grow in height 1 to 4 feet. The newer
showy varieties of Garden Mums are not as winter hardy as the
older varieties of years past. However, it is possible for them to
come back year after year. If desired, divide in the spring and
discard the old woody growth. Or plant blooming root divisions in
early fall. Apply fertilizer liberally through the growing season
until the buds show color.
