Feeding the Birds

(Squirrels too!)

Birds in the landscape can be a great source of entertainment for the whole family. And, with proper landscaping and feeding practices, it's easy to keep these feathered entertainers interested in your yard season after season. Keep in mind their needs of water, shelter, and a source of food. Water in the summer is easy to provide, and thanks to water warmers, winter water can be just about as easy. Supplying water for the birds is way too important to forget about. It's as important as their food. Planting evergreen shrubs and trees, as well as planting densely branched deciduous trees and shrubs can provide a natural means of shelter. These plants provide winter and summer protection, as well as protection from predators. Fruiting trees, shrubs and evergreens can also be a great source of food for the birds, as well as using bird feeders. Bird feeders are sold in all shapes and sizes and should be placed in a sunny and somewhat calm area of the yard, and in a place that is visible to you from a window, but close enough to the protection of trees and shrubs. When you fill your feeder with bird feed, do remember that you get what you pay for. Cheap feed is usually that; cheap, and full of filler seeds most birds don't want and waste on the ground! So buy a good blend of seeds for your birds to eat.  Speaking of feeders, did you know it should be cleaned on a regular basis? Moldy bird feed can be very life threatening to the birds.
