Feather Reed Grass

2001 Perennial of the Year

Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'

Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster',  is a long-blooming, low maintenance, long-lived perennial grass. This 2001 Perennial of the Year is one of the most versatile, attractive, and low maintenance ornamental grasses.  It is often described as "perpetual motion grass" because the lightest breeze sets this grass in motion. The graceful movement is a plus for any landscape. It is excellent as a specimen plant or providing a vertical accent in the landscape. Sometimes feather reed grass is used for creating a landscape screen. It can also be used on patios in containers. This grass is often used in fresh or dried arrangements.

The deep green, shiny foliage appears in early spring and last until early winter. In early June the inflorescences appear atop the lush foliage. The flowers appear light pink at first and later turn a golden tan. Even during winter this grass remains ornamental.

'Karl Foerster' is an easy plant to grow. The growth habit is vertical with a tuft of foliage 2 to 3 feet tall and flower stems to 5 feet in height. This plant tolerates a wide range of conditions in full sun or partial shade. Growth is best in well-drained soils.
