Elephant Ears

(Caladium esculentum)

Caladium esculentum Elephant Ears is also known by the scientific name Colocasia esculenta. Elephant Ears has been prized for its huge, bold-textured foliage that resembles an "elephant's ears". It is a wonderful tropical looking plant for shady areas.

Elephant Ears bulbs are purchased in the spring and should be planted in the ground or in containers after the soil has warmed. They prefer moist, well-drained soil. When in full leaf, Elephant Ears can drink a lot. The leaves will wilt if thirsty. This plant likes heat and humidity and will grow to a height of 4 to 6 feet. Before the first frost in the fall, let the plant dry down, dig up the bulb, and store indoors for the winter.
