Hoopsii Blue Spruce

(Picea pungens glauca 'Hoopsii')

The Spruces represent an interesting group of usually tall, symmetrical, pyramidal to conical trees. The Hoopsii Blue Spruce is considered by many to be the number one choice of the Picea pungens varieties because of its extremely glaucous (blue-white) foliage and because it is the best grower. It has a dense pyramidal form with stiff, horizontal spreading branches to the ground. The soft, silvery blue-gray new foliage turns to a bluer-green as it ages. The growth rate for the Hoopsii Blue Spruce is slow to medium and it will grow in height 30 to 60 feet with a 10 to 20 foot spread. It prefers rich, moist soil in full sunlight and it is somewhat drought tolerant. The Hoopsii Blue Spruce is often used as a specimen plant. However, more and more, it is being used in groupings.
