Myrica

(Bayberry)

Myrica pensylvanica, better know as Bayberry, and sometimes known as Candleberry, is an excellent choice for mass plantings. It also combines well with broadleaf evergreens and can be integrated into foundation plantings. The foliage is a deep lustrous green with a leathery texture that is very aromatic when crushed. The female plants will have waxy blue-gray berries in the fall and winter. However it is necessary to have both male and female plants for fruit. Its berries are used to make bayberry candles.

Bayberry seems to be extremely adaptable. It thrives in poor, sandy, well drained soils, but also performs well in heavy clay soils. It grows well in either sun or shade. The upright, rounded Bayberry can grow 6-9 feet in height with a spread of 6-9 feet.
